Indy told me of her journey of pain up to four different high places to appease four different gods. At one point she hiked 18 miles. She said that some carry others up the steep inclines piggy-back style; some are carried in chairs, but most climb on their own.
“The point is to suffer,” she said. “I was one of the few that made it to the top of all four.”
She was proud of her accomplishment, and I was touched that she felt comfortable enough to share her experience with me. We have been friends for a few years, and we learned long ago to respect each other’s religious beliefs. I learn from her and she learns from me. We rejoice in our commonalities, and discuss our differences.
Therein lies the difference in the relationship between two persons who were prepared to go the extra mile to respect their differences and the environmental McCarthyism that the Environmental Directorate of the EU Commission so piously and yet so inhumanely inflicts on palm oil using surrogate green groups to run ill conceived campaigns that the EC is fully aware is based on manufactured and false evidence all in the name of protecting the EU’s own indigenous edible oil industries who are hapless in facing the market onslaught of the rampantly high yielding palm oil!
How high yielding? Staggering but palm oil yield typically exceeds the yield of EU edible oilseed crops like sunflower and rapeseed oils by “no contest” amounts. For instance, the average yield per hectare for palm oil is 4.14 metric tons whilst that for sunflower is 0.53 and rapeseed is typically 0.69 metric tons per hectare planted! To make matters more worrying for the EU edible oilseed industries, they have just about reached the genetic limit of productivity whilst best in class palm oil production can yield twice its current yield and current research shows that up to 20 metric tons per hectare is not inconceivable before palm oil reaches its genetic limits! If not for Italian civil libertarian groups, Libertiamo all these shenanigans by the EC would have remained concealed and covered. Unfortunately for the EC, Libertiamo had some eagle eyed researchers who unearthed this shameful scam or this conspiratorial and dishonorable history of the EC would never have seen the light of day!
Rumbling could already be heard since 2005 when the curiously named Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) suddenly published a “report” called “Cruel Oil: How palm oil harms health, rainforest and wildlife” in which they made wild and unsubstantiated claims that palm oil cultivation was causing massive deforestation and threatening the extinction of biodiversity such as the orang utan.
The report however, was prepared with the help of Aid Environment listed as partners with Hivos — a Netherlands based civil society group with direct links to campaigns in Indonesia. Hivos, in turn, is funded by the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry for close to 70% of its annual 100m Euro budget.
A 2010 report by researchers Caroline Boin and Andrea Marchesetti entitled “Friends of the EU.” (Vide: http://www.policynetwork.net/accountability/publication/friends-eu)showed that the EU, through its environmental ministries and commissions is involved in funding up to 70% of the operating budgets of FOE EU.
Now Italian think tank, Libertiamo has blown the lid off the entire elaborate, cynical and vicious schemes masterminded by green groups and eagerly sanctioned by the Environmental Directorate of the European Commission! That by itself, is already a blot on the good name of some of the prominent European countries which are signatories of the WTO treaty, but what really disappoints is that Libertiamo points out that most of the anti-palm oil campaigns are based, at best, on “manufactured evidence”! THE END
