A web blog concerned with the Paleo Diet called www.paleohacks.com posted this question just a couple of hours ago: “Everyone and their brother is concerned about the deforestation scare with the Palm Oil. I was also concerned and decided to check it out a few months ago. I'm revisiting my information today, because I'm probably going to bite the bullet and buy some (Tropical Traditions has a gallon for like $24 through 12/30/12 - the reason I'm going to buy it today). I've been using coconut oil and ghee mainly in my diet to date and I've been plenty happy with it, but I like to try new things. Anyhow, when I was researching the Palm Oil, I came across this article which calls it a hoax. Opinions? Has anyone else heard anything about this so-called 'hoax'?” Paleohacks then went on to post the link to this article by the Palm Oil Truth Foundation:
In our view, it is a clear, irrefutable and incontrovertible hoax!
Italian civil libertarian group, Libertiamo has blown the lid off the entire elaborate, cynical and vicious scheme masterminded by the Environmental Directorate of the European Commission (EC) to protect the EU’s own indigenous edible oilseed industries which are unable to compete against the hyper yielding palm oil in the open market! (Vide: http://disarmingthegreens.it/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Taxpayer-Funding-NGO-Collusion-and-Manufactured-Crises.pdf)
That by itself is already a blot on the good name of some of the prominent European countries which are signatories of the WTO treaty, but what really disappoints is that Libertiamo points out that the EC is fully aware that most of the anti-palm oil campaigns are based on false “and manufactured evidence”!
The entire vile scheme is planned and executed by the EC’s green surrogates across regions to create the impression that the palm oil campaigns are unplanned, popular and spontaneous! A broad range of green NGO’s plus even zoos, girl scouts (or rather the adults behind the girl scouts) and politicians from across the globe are recruited to the cause.
The truly sad part is that the premises used for these campaigns, the saturated fat component of palm oil and its health implications plus the alleged massive deforestation caused by the palm oil industry had been debunked and disproved by tons of scientific studies which proved that palm oil is in fact heart friendly (Vide: Donald J. McNamara, PhD: “Palm Oil and Heart Health: A case of Manipulated Perception and Misuse of Science” 240S Vol 29 No. 3(s) Journal of the American College of Nutrition).
The issue of deforestation too flies in the face of facts for Malaysia, despite planting palm oil for more than a hundred years has still managed to retain 59.5 percent forest cover, certainly far better than New Zealand's 31.87 percent or the UK's 11.5 percent! (CIA World FactBook 2011) Further, the FAO has found that the rate of forest change in Malaysia declined from 0.66pc in the years 2000-2005 to 0.42pc in the years 2005-2010 (FAO Global Forest Resource Assessment 2010), certainly not the apocalyptic picture of massive deforestation that these EC surrogates and apologists attempt to paint.
There is a Latin maxim, "reductio ad absurdium" that applies to this sad and slow demonstration of human foibles and greed. The ugly specter of payola in this issue raises the very real possibility that the green group surrogates of the EC are either wusses or smug, disingenuous and frighteningly detached from the realities on the ground.
Smallholders, who account for more than 40% of global palm oil production, live in the real world, not in the rarefied world of bloodless abstractions and lofty proclamations of intent on the one hand which serves only to conceal the true agenda – the desperate angling for funds and ugly protectionism that is at the heart of this debate! THE END
