If you figure that palm oil is bad for your heart, you haven’t been paying attention for the past quarter of a century and if you believe the deluded claim that palm oil is causing massive deforestation and threatening the extinction of the lovable orang-utan, you must be a die-hard fan of Lance Armstrong!
Both claims, it has been proven, are flakier than baked croissant.
In the early eighties, the supposed Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) alleged that palm oil was largely saturated fat and thus bad for heart health. This simplistic assertion was proven wrong when tons of scientific studies published in peer reviewed journals showed that the saturated fatty acids in the sn-1 and -3 position (typically found in palm oil) has very different biological consequences than animal fats such as lard and milk fats as the saturated fats are primarily found in the sn-2 position! (Vide: Donald J. McNamara, PhD: “Palm Oil and Heart Health: A case of Manipulated Perception and Misuse of Science” 240S Vol 29 No. 3(s) Journal of the American College of Nutrition)
Palm oil is also the richest source of the heart friendly anti-oxidant tocotrienol, a superior form of Vitamin E as well as other heart friendly phyto-nutrients such as Co Enzyme Q10, betacarotenes and other polyphenols.
Then after lying low for some 2 decades, CSPI published a “report” called “Cruel Oil: How palm oil harms health, rainforest and wildlife” in which they made wild and unsubstantiated claims against the palm oil industry.
The report was later exposed as having been prepared with the assistance of Aid Environment listed as partners with Hivos — a Netherlands based civil society group with direct links to campaigns in Indonesia. Hivos, in turn, is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for close to 70per cent of its annual 100m Euro budget.
More recently, an academic study by researchers Caroline Boin and Andrea Marchesetti entitled “Friends of the EU.”(Vide: http://www.policynetwork.net/accountability/publication/friends-eu) showed that the EU, through its environmental ministries and commissions is involved in funding up to 70 per cent of the operating budgets of FOE EU.
If that was not bad enough, Italian civil libertarian group, Libertiamo recently blasted the whole shameful sham wide open when they published a study entitled “Taxpayer Funding, NGO Collusion and Manufactured Crises.” In this study, Libertiamo points out that since 2005, the European Commission (EC) has provided nearly €5million (MYR 19.7 million) to the World Wildlife Fund and €4 million (MYR 15,8 million) to Friends of the Earth. Climate Action Network (CAN) also received nearly €1 million (MYR 3.9 million) in the past two years alone.
Says Libertiamo: European governments are spending significant sums ostensibly to engage in environmental advocacy in the developing world. In reality, their primary concern is to protect the EU’s indigenous edible oilseed industries such as sunflower and rapeseed oil, which are hapless and unable to compete with the hyper yielding palm oil on the open market!
What was particularly galling was when Libertiamo pointed out that the EC was fully aware that the claims against palm oil made by surrogate green groups were based on “manufactured” and false evidence!
The vile scheme apparently, is planned and executed by the EC’s green surrogates across regions to create the impression that the palm oil campaigns are unplanned, popular and spontaneous! A broad range of green NGO’s plus even zoos, girl scouts (or rather the adults behind the girl scouts) and politicians from across the globe are recruited to the cause.
Sadly, the EC in adopting this disgraceful stance against palm oil will one day be exposed and be treated one day like a dodgy shrimp in an official EC banquet, spat out with contempt but furtively into a tissue with a sideway glance to see if anybody noticed! THE END
