There have been many historical recounts of underdogs triumphing over giants and these stories now largely serve as motivation for all who face a seemingly hopeless situation. From the biblical times there is of course the story of David and Goliath, a classic story of how the little guy can stand up to the big bully and come out on top.
In more recent times there is the story of the palm oil industry taking on the might of several established Non-Governmental Groups and their unscrupulous donor governments. Taking on the might of the European Commission and NGOs such as Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund, and the Rainforest Action Network is no easy feat, especially for a product that is grown in countries with very limited media resources in the developing world.
With mounting scientific evidence and research that has destroyed the ludicrous claims made in the anti-palm oil campaigns, the palm oil industry is proving to be a difficult opponent for these European bullies. This has not dissuaded them from continuously trying to erect palm oil trade barriers however. In fact only recently they have switched tactics from attempting to tarnish palm oil as being bad for people’s health to the baseless claim that the industry is environmentally unfriendly.
After failing miserably to add a 300% tax hike on palm oil products in France, senators are now desperately seeking the support of other European countries such as Belgium and Switzerland. These giants of Europe have no intention of fighting fair and have now reverted to the discredited claims of health risks for those who consume products that contain palm oil.
French Senator, Daudigny’s Bill essentially claimed that the French public needed to be protected from consumption of the supposedly high levels of saturated fats in palm oil. This completely disregarded other products on the market such as butter and cheese which contain a lot more saturated fats that Nutella and other similar products. This Bill, which would have seen tax on palm oil go from €100 (US$129) to €300 (US$390) per tonne, was rightly rejected by the French National Assembly’s Social Affairs Commission.
The decision to reject the preposterous Bill clearly takes into account tons of scientific research which shows that palm oil is one of the healthiest vegetables available, despite what the delusional French Senator would have you believe. Animal fats such as those derived from milk and butter pose a much greater threat to heart health than palm oil does. This is due to that fact that the saturated fatty acids that are typically found in palm oil have very different biological consequences to those found in animal fats.

Further to that palm oil has many more heart friendly properties including the anti-oxidant tocotrienol phyto-nutrients such as betacartotene and Co Enzyme Q10. It is also a superb form of vitamin E and vitamin A which are both essential for immune support and tissue growth.
The giants of Europe are constantly coming up with inventive new ways to erect unwarranted trade barriers to palm oil, and these discriminatory health claims are just another on the list of desperate claims that make up the anti-palm oil campaigns. With truth and evidence on its side the palm oil underdog keeps defeating the giants. THE END
