I subscribe to the epistemological axiom that one should never ascribe to malice that which is easily explained by stupidity! However, when I contemplate on what motivates green groups to embark on anti-palm oil campaigns, I can’t help getting the sneaky feeling that it is not stupidity but a cold calculated plan that is executed by these green groups with a final objective in mind.

In the case of palm oil, the planners and executors of the defamatory anti-palm oil campaigns are fully cognizant of the principles of fraud perpetuation. They know that the value of the seemingly never-ending series of anti-palm oil campaigns is not in their merits but in their mere existence! They exploit this phenomenon to further their own selfish ends, regardless of the human costs that these anti-palm oil campaigns exact.

Similarly, they launch campaigns against palm oil across vast geographical regions to create the impression that the palm oil campaigns are unplanned, popular and spontaneous! A broad range of green NGO’s plus even zoos, girl scouts (or rather the adults behind the girl scouts) and politicians from across the globe are recruited to the cause.

The Rainforest Foundation is just one of the many usual suspects wearing a different ball-gown, except that now it has morphed into a rampant caricature of itself!

We used to be baffled by these seemingly endless activism against what is probably the most sustainable of all edible oilseeds which is planted on only 0.23% of global agricultural lands and yet accounts for the major bulk of edible oil production (more than 30%).

However, we're baffled no more with the publication last year of the damning expose by Italian civil libertarian group, Libertiamo which notes that the European Commission (EC) is behind these palm oil campaigns handing over millions of Euros to green group surrogates annually ostensibly to help improve environmental practices in the developing world. In reality, observed Libertiamo, these payments are basically payola paid out to these groups to prop up the EU's indigenous edible oil industries such as rapeseed and sunflower oil, which are hapless in facing the market onslaught against the hyper yielding palm oil!

With this obsessive mission to engage in protectionism using surrogates to avoid violating the WTO Rules, and in their vain efforts to restore order to a regional grouping fallen on hard times, the EC has corrupted idealistic green groups, turning them into organizations bereft of conscience or a moral compass. Worse, these green groups in taking the payola from the EC, however it is disguised or packaged have committed a felony, a crime punishable with imprisonment when all these finally come to light. And so will the officials in the Environmental Directorate of the European Commission for participating in a scheme as vile and criminal as this – for search as I might, there is no other word to describe the baseness of their grand schemes, but criminal!

It matters not a jot to these individuals wearing the cloak of high office and the paragons of environmental idealism to engage in such acts of subterfuge that impacts on the daily life of hundreds of thousands of smallholders and plantation workers. Contrary to popular opinion more than 40% of global palm oil output comes from smallholders most of whom came into palm oil cultivation by participating in government sponsored rural poverty eradication programs. These smallholders have dreams too, perhaps to enjoy some of the creature comforts that we in the West take for granted. Most of them are grateful for the opening of the doors of opportunity that palm oil cultivation brings them such as the dream of having such basic necessities as electricity and potable water and having their children pursue higher education, all of which matters little to RF so long as the money keeps rolling in! THE END

@VirgilK. I agree. The officials at the Rainforest Foundation should be investigated, charged and thrown in the slammer for taking payola! The slammer is where these crooks belong!
